Fire extinguisher types and uses

There are several types of fire extinguishers, each designed for use on different types of fires. Here are some of the most common types of fire extinguishers and their uses:

  • Water extinguishers: Water extinguishers are used to extinguish fires involving ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, and cloth. They should not be used on electrical fires or fires involving flammable liquids.
  • Foam extinguishers: Foam extinguishers are used to extinguish fires involving flammable liquids such as gasoline, oil, and solvents. They work by smothering the fire and preventing oxygen from reaching the fuel.
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) extinguishers: CO2 extinguishers are used to extinguish fires involving electrical equipment and flammable liquids. They work by displacing the oxygen in the air, which suffocates the fire.
  • Dry chemical extinguishers: Dry chemical extinguishers are used to extinguish fires involving flammable liquids, electrical equipment, and combustible metals. They work by smothering the fire and interrupting the chemical reaction that sustains it.
  • Wet chemical extinguishers: Wet chemical extinguishers are used to extinguish fires involving cooking oils and fats. They work by cooling the fire and creating a barrier between the fuel and the oxygen.
  • Halon extinguishers: Halon extinguishers are used to extinguish fires involving sensitive electronic equipment. They work by interfering with the chemical reaction that sustains the fire.

It is important to use the correct type of fire extinguisher for the type of fire you are dealing with. Using the wrong type of extinguisher can actually make the fire worse and put you in danger. Always read the instructions and familiarize yourself with the types of fires each extinguisher is designed to handle.
